How to Choose Transformer Types?

Transformers are electrical equipment used to change AC electrical energy from one voltage level to another of the same frequency through electromagnetic induction between coils. With the modernization of power systems, transformers have evolved to include more intelligent features. In addition to voltage regulation, modern transformers are equipped with digital technology for more efficient monitoring, maintenance, and control. These digital signal processing and communication technologies enable real-time monitoring of power transmission and voltage regulation.

When choosing a transformer model, it is important to examine the power supply voltage, the actual power load, and the conditions of the location. Then, based on the technical data indicated on the transformer nameplate, consider the capacity, voltage, current, and environmental conditions comprehensively to select the appropriate transformer capacity. Finally, decide on the type and structure of the transformer.

However, there are many types of transformers based on different methods.

Based on cooling method, transformers can be divided into dry-type transformers and oil-immersed transformers.

Oil-immersed transformers utilize insulating oil as an insulating medium, with the core and windings fully immersed in it. This cooling oil safeguards the core and windings, protecting them from moisture. Currently, except for certain special transformers and gas-insulated transformers, most large- and medium-sized transformers still use transformer oil as the insulating medium. They are suitable for outdoor locations with high voltage and large capacity.

Dry-type transformers utilize air for natural cooling. They offer features such as short-circuit resistance, maintenance-free operation, high efficiency, small footprint, and low noise levels. They are suitable for areas requiring high fire protection and safety standards.

Based on application, transformers include instrument transformers, power transformers, and special transformers.

Instrument transformers are devices used in AC systems to measure voltage, current, power, energy, and power factor for both measurement and protection purposes. They are crucial for ensuring the efficient transmission of power between generators and primary distribution circuits in power plants and substations. Transformers with specific purposes beyond the standard functions are often referred to as special transformers. These special transformers operate under unique working conditions and load situations compared to general transformers.

Marine transformers are a type of power equipment used on ships. As electric power becomes increasingly important in marine applications, the stability of power supply is crucial. Marine transformers play a key role in marine power systems, providing high voltage levels and large capacities. The marine transformers manufactured by CEEG are equipped with a special water-cooling system that protects the transformer from heat damage. These water-cooled transformers feature strong overload capacity, low loss, low noise, small size, light weight, and easy installation.

An explosion-proof dry-type transformer for mines is a special type of transformer designed for harsh environments, particularly in the coal industry. This transformer has features such as explosion-proof, dust-proof, and moisture-proof capabilities, which allow for safe operation in high-risk environments. CEEG mine transformers are designed with special explosion-proof shells made of high-quality materials to ensure high operational reliability. This design can withstand dust and corrosive gases, thereby extending the lifespan of the transformer and ensuring safe operation.

Based on the core material, transformers can be divided into silicon steel core transformers and amorphous alloy transformers.

The core of traditional transformers is mainly made of silicon steel sheets. These sheets can produce a high magnetic induction intensity. Compared to amorphous alloy transformers, silicon steel transformers are cost-effective but weigh 1-8 times more than amorphous alloy transformers.

Amorphous alloy transformers have low-loss and high-efficiency. They use Fe-based amorphous metal cores, which are more efficient, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly. Oil-immersed amorphous transformers are mainly used in power distribution, while dry-type amorphous alloy transformers are used in engineering fields with high safety requirements for fire and dust protection.
